back to work addition

I have been off for over a week. It was SO nice to be home and spend time with my boys and family. But it is back to work for me today.
I am grateful my time off but I am also so very grateful for my job. It allows me to do the things I love and feel secure.

I hope you all had a beautiful holiday, so much to be thankful for.

Let the seasons begin!!!

My journals (and the two blog books I made, one for each of the last two years) came yesterday!

I can't wait to give a few of these away this season.

There is still time for you to get yours for the gift giving season!

Coloring in the Morning Sunlight

We spend a good portion of the morning sitting in the front room, enjoying the sunlight and playing with crayons. He is getting better about not eatting them but still likes to pull them out and put them back in the box more than he likes the coloring part. It's all good motorskills stuff and we can talk about colors too while he sorts.

365-day38--It's FRIDAY!, originally uploaded by NessieNoodle.

woot!
it's friday AND I have the next week off from work. It is trying to snow outside and I am so ready to just hunker down with my boys and be thankful for all the love that surrounds me.

This purse is one of my all time favorite thrift store scores, the pheasant bag, as I have dubbed it.

hand,bag

I won this bag from Heather over at Shivaya Naturals
the other week. It is super sweet and will be perfect for the holiday parties this season. It is created by an Oakland CA company called Off Hand Designs.
There is a velvety soft wrist part, a beautifuly lined inside complete with two little pockets and it has a cool way of opening and closing without a snap or a zipper (I will take more pictures when I have some decent light and time).
~~
If you are stopping by from Corner View- howdy hi! I am going to admit that I just don't know how to upload photos from my cell phone. and if I did they are sorta crap since my phone is the cheapest of the cheap, (read: Free).

yoga mat bag addition

about 12 weeks ago I started teaching on a regular basis again (post baby). Monday nights are yoga nights. I teach an all levels class at one of the best studios (imo) in town and have a sweet little group of regular students who make me laugh and re-invigorate me every time. It is a lovely way to start off the work week.

I am so greatful for my husband who does 'single parent' duty on these nights, for the studio that I teach at, for my students and for the fact that I get to practice and share something I love with others.

The random number generate chose 8, so Katleen! this Friday the 13th is your lucky day!! I think I have your addy but just in case can you email me with it? Also let me know which journal you would like. Kathleen's favorite treat are Ting-a-lings. She sent me the recipe and said I could share it with all of you as well, enjoy!

How to make Ting-A-Lings

1 lb. sweet milk choc.
2 sq. unsweetened choc.
5C corn flakes
salt

Melt choc and mix in cornflakes.
Drop on waxed paper and dry.
Store in airtight container.

Thank you all for playing along. I loved to read all your favorite holiday treats. Some of them I also love, (like hot cocoa) and others (like roasted chestnuts) are only part of my holidays in the lyrics of songs. I have found a few new sweet blogs from this contest as well! so that is always fun.
I do hope you will consider picking up a journal or two for your holiday (or baby shower?)gift giving. Blurb really does do a swell job on the books and you won't be disappointed!

Have a lovely weekend friends! I will pop in on Sunday for a much neglected, "Quotable Sunday" post.

Then the Ocean...

Well, that took forever didn't it?!
Sorry to leave you all hanging, I have been a pretty busy at work and was bitten by the book making bug. Not only did I customize those journals but I also finished up making a blog book for each of the past two years of this little blog- there has been so much to document and remember. I am so excited to have those in my hands! To see my posts and photos in a book is going to feel really great.

Oh and if you are holding your breath to hear the winner of the journal giveaway I will be using the random number generator and posting the lucky names on Friday evening some time. Thanks again for such kind words about the journals and I do hope that if your name isn't drawn you will consider picking up one or two for holiday gifts (or a treat for yourself!)

At any rate, I wanted to take you on our little trip to the ocean. After playing in the redwoods we wound our way down the Santa Cruz mountains to the Pacific Ocean. The sky was clear and blue and after setting up the tent and gathering a few snacks we headed down the trail to the beach.

moon rise
New Brighton State Park/Beach is a great spot. You can hear the waves from your campsite and easily walk down to the sand in about 5 minutes or so. There are lots of dog walkers and joggers as well as beach combers and people just hanging out, like us. We set MrO down, bare footed and let him at it. Sand is a little tricky for walking but he managed to make his way, step-step-plop-step-step-step-plop.
my boys on the beach
We opened a beer (for us, not the kid)and got out the snacks.
Um, note to self-- snacks + baby + sand = a messy baby boy.

After the sand had been brushed away we let MrO loose on the beach. I love to stand back and watch where and what he will explore. Giving him the space to discover is really important to me.
beach play
There was playing and a first (unsure) step into the ocean.
First Touch of the Ocean

On Halloween day we made our way into Santa Cruz proper.
spidey songs
Checking out the Boardwalk and going into our favorite t-shirt shop to get the obligatory tourist-y sweatshirt.
sparkle seal
(I always tease Daddy-O that he does his best clothes shopping in the biggest tourist traps). Half of the boardwalk was closed due to construction and with MrO in the carrier we really couldn't get on any rides (he is still to short to go on any as well). But we checked out the carousel and finally wandered to the arcade.
round and round
I had heard a rumor that they took out all the photochemical photo booths and I was sad to find that this was true...
kissing booth
It had been a tradition to sit in the booth at the Boardwalk since Daddy-O was a wee thing with his parents. But we hopped in the digital booth and had fun just the same. We wandered out on the pier for lunch and seal watching. Clam chowder, calamari and a paper cup of beer, mmm beer.
Andys Bait 'n' Tackle

yellow boats

After lunch we hopped back in the car. We heard that down town does it up for the holiday and that there would be a "parade" of costumes. Our little land shark fell asleep before we made it there though and so we just took a nice drive up HWY 1.
There is nothing quite like seeing acres of agriculture fields with the ocean in as the backdrop.

tractor siloute and pumpkins

On Sunday we packed up camp, MrO played for a good long time in the back of the car and then I put him in the ergo carrier where he fell asleep as I helped Daddy-O pack the up tent and the car. He was out until we made it to Freemont where we stopped for lunch at a good friend's house. They hadn't gotten to meet the Kid-O yet and we hadn't seen their two littles in a long time so it was a very short but sweet visit.

Back in the car to watch the moon rise and the land become steep as we made our way from the coast to the mountains and then the high desert once more. It was such a lovely little trip. We needed to get out of town and we picked a perfect weekend for it. Thanks for coming along for the ride!

Corner View: Favorite Dish

Wow, this week is hard one to narrow down for me, favorite dish? I don't think I have just one! I am a big fan of food. I like to cook it and I like to eat it. But what really makes food taste good is love.
And for me there never are 'too many cooks in the kitchen'- creating in a kitchen full of people is what really makes a a meal over the top amazing, and is part of the whole experience.

journals and a give-away

Hi all, happy Monday to you.
I know I promised oceans views and they are coming soon, promise! But first I am really excited about something and I want to share with you- I have decided to create custom journals that include my photography in them! They are up for sale over at Blurb.com right now. I have ordered several books (for family gifts) and let me assure you that Blurb does a fantastic, professional job on their orders. Each journal includes 40 pages with at least 3 of my photos (black and white) on the inside pages. The photos mingle in with lined pages for your to fill. These might just make a perfect stocking stuffer *wink*.
A little about what you will find if you hop on over to the site...

There are two journals that are primarily food-centric. One is for keeping notes on your kitchen adventures, meals, meal planning, grocery lists, restaurants you have visited or would like to try. This would make a fantastic hostess gift for your holiday hosts or that foodie in your life. The other journal would be perfect for the new moms and dads out there- it is a baby's first food journal. I know I liked to keep track of what I fed the Kid-O, how I prepped his first foods, the reaction it got upon first taste and if there were any adverse allergic reactions (we had none, but my sister-in law quickly realized that peanuts and tree nuts were out for her little man). This would make a nice addition to a baby shower gift, maybe a basket full of feeding utensils and the journal?

fly

The other two journals are inspirational notebooks- Each would be a perfect place to keep track of the joyful moments in your day, those things that you are grateful for or perhaps a place to track that new year's resolution journey you are about to embark on or to keep a list of goals. Perhaps you just keep it in your bag so you can jot down little things throughout your day that you don't want to forget (call mom, practice yoga, read this book, make reservations for Friday night date with hubby). Maybe the photos I have included will spark a poem or a short story.

Interested? go have a look, here is the link.

Because I have been really luck in the past few weeks with giveaways- I have failed to mention that I won an I heart NYC t-shirt from Cate atTribecca Yummy Mummy and a sweet little bag from Heather at Shivaya Naturals. I am going to hold a give away and one lucky reader will win a hard covered journal of their choice.

To enter, leave your name and a working email address as well as telling me your favorite holiday kitchen delight. If you would like to be entered twice, mention and link to this giveaway on your blog (email me about it so I know to put your name in twice). I will close the contest doors on Lucky Friday the 13th~ good luck!!

First the trees...

365-Day17--The Redwood Bench
We first headed into the windy (as in, "you might need to pull the car over because that many quick turns could equal trouble.") Santa Cruz mountains to visit the Big Basin Redwood State Park. The redwood trees are stunning up there. Your neck hurts from looking up and you get a bit dizzy from it all really.
lookingup1
It is mind blowing to think about just how long these tress have been around. Thousands and thousands of years of watching the sun set and rise, of the winds blowing and the rain falling. Years to watch the wildlife be born and die, to sit nervously as the axes and the saws made their way through, keeping your branches crossed that you would not be the one to fall.
fell*1983
And now that this area is protected, the trees get to hear the voices of little kids and of adults whisper, "wow" as they wander around their trunks that are scarred from fires, stumbling because their gaze is up instead of down at the trail.
redwood theater
It was cold in the shade of these trees that barely allow the sun to reach the forest floor and the campfire's smoke hangs heavy in the damp coastal air. Something this desert rat family just isn't used to.
camp table
There are way too many raccoons who are not afraid of a little foot stomping and know how to open camp boxes and get to the food that they have become accustom to. Daddy-O had a pocket full of small rocks to ward off the little buggers and we made sure to pick up every piece of food that our little forest gnome dropped. If people understood just how out of whack they make the animals and the ecosystem by leaving out their food it sure would make a difference. We put our camp box of dry food and our cooler in the car each night- nothing worse than having to get up in the middle of the night to chase off a pack of mid-night snackers!
walkers
I would love to go back when we have more time. I felt like we set up camp and then broke it right back down again. (We are getting really good at putting up the tent in no time flat! I can even do it while carrying the babe in the ergo carrier) There are miles of trails to hike and explore and lots of trees that need hugging. I mean really- look at these trees, how could you not want to at least try to wrap your arms around something that majestic.

P.S. Thank you everyone for stopping by last week and leaving such sweet comments. I have over 400 posts in my google reader, a little overwhelming. I will more than likely clear them all and start fresh- it gives me a little bit of an anxiety attack to see that much to catch up on. Hope you are all well....
