Christmas Recap...

*

Ah, Christmas. How quickly you come and go. We had a lovely day and even got a walk in with the blue skies. Santa was good to us all and I think I will let the pictures speak for themselves. I hope you had a beautiful holiday. I will be checking back in this week, I took it off from work so I am hoping to get a little crafting done and maybe some photography too...
I hope your day was as lovely as ours!

Day 69- watching me bake

This was taken just before O headed up to get his bath and go to bed. I pulled over the kitchen stool for him and he loved it, even 'helped' me measure. He really does love being in the kitchen and I love sharing this part of the holiday with him.

North Pole Mud Bars- a recipe

day66

On Sunday night we had a little neighborhood holiday gathering. I did a quick scan of my fridge, I had one egg- not a good sign for baking. I then remembered that I had purchased chocolate to make the peppermint bark.

north pole mud bars

However, as I read the recipe it became clear that I hadn't purchased enough white chocolate to make them. Looking on the inside of the bar's wrapper I saw a few other options (I love when they do that, don't you? One caught my eye, Mississippi Mud Bars. I only need one egg and it looked like I had everything else for it as well.

quarter cup of peppermint

Reading a bit further, I realized it called for walnuts. I don't like to put nuts in my baked goods especially when I am bringing them to a gathering- too much worry about allergies. The other thing was, I had already chopped up the candy canes to make the bark and with no walnuts in the house I adjusted the recipe.
I thought you might like theseas much as we did, so I am passing on my spin. These would perfect for the holiday or maybe a little treat to help Santa on his way in a couple of nights??

Vanessa's North Pole Mud Bars
(adapted from a Ghiradelli Mississippi Mud Bar recipe)

north pole mud bars

Ingredients-
  • 1/2 cup (one stick) butter or margarine, softened

  • 3/4 cups brown sugar, firmly packed

  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1/4 tsp. salt

  • 1 bar(4 ox) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Bar, chopped and divided in half (I used 1/2 cup chocolate chips here and it worked like magic)

  • 1 bar (4 oz) White Chocolate Baking bar, chopped and divided in half

  • 1/2 cup crushed candy cane or peppermint candies (I used the food processor but you could also use a zip top bag and a can of food to smash them)

Instructions-

  • Preheat oven to 350F

  • In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar, egg and vanilla until light and fluffy

  • Mix in flour, baking soda and slat

  • Stir in half the chocolate (white and semi-sweet) and half the crushed peppermint candy

  • Spread in greased foil lined 9" square baking pan.

  • Bake 12-15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out almost clean.

  • Sprinkle with remaining chocolate

  • Cover with foil. Let stand 5 minutes or until chocolates are melted.

  • Swirl chocolate with a small knife to marbleized

  • Sprinkle with remaining crushed peppermint candies

  • Cool in pan until firm, then cut into bars.

cabin christmas

love

Just got back in from a great weekend 'up at the cabin'. We did our annual Christmas gathering with my husband's family. It was super sweet and really a great time.
We got in late on Friday evening to Greagle and got settled in and visited with everyone. We were sad that one of the cousins had come down with a super high fever and wouldn't be joining us but we defenitly had fun all the same.

joy

On Saturday morning it was a big yummy breakfast of make ahead blueberry french toast with blueberry syrup (I felt a little like "buddy" in elf with all that syrup in my day) and also an egg and ham casserole. We cleaned up the kitchen and got dressed then headed outside to play in the snow.

3 sledding cousins

Despite all the snow that Reno has gotten in the past week or so the storm managed to miss them and so it was sort of hard and crunch not so much the white and fluffy variety. That didn't stop us though. There was a snow fort to be made and sledding to be had. Papa built a fire in the fire pit so we could stand around the flames but still watch the action.

solo ride

Nap time rolled around so in we went for a little hot chocolate and put the babies down for a rest. I walked into town with my sis-in law, her hubby and my dad-in law. There are surprisingly cute stores in 'downtown' and I found a few little stocking stuffer for super reasonable prices. I liked supporting the local businesses and when you find something that you haven't been able to find anywhere else you have to go for it.

shop window

Once we were back to the house it was time to start prepping dinner. A few glasses of funny nog were pored and a beer or two were cracked open.

cocktail

We got our salad going, bread and the shrimp thawed.
Then we realized that the crab had to be cleaned. Not the most pretty job in the world, but at least we all know how to do it! Thanks Grammie for jumping in at the clutch moment. We got those bad boys cleaned and then into the pot then went.
siblings in the kitchen

We found a good breaking spot and got all the kids rounded up for gift opening. Nothing better than a bunch of wrapping paper flying and new toys to play with. The KidO made out with a few new books, hand made jammie bottoms, a new helicopter toy, a see'n'say, play dough, and bubbles.
see n say
Lots of fun. We broke for the table hoping the kids would be entertained enough with their new gear for the adults to eat. It worked relatively well I must say!

Dinner was served and it was a lovely free for all. And as always there was the question of, "How do you eat your crab? Are you a piler or an eat as you go"??? Do you pull all the meat out and get a good pile going to enjoy or do you get a piece, eat and then get another piece? I am an eat as I go, I like the crab to be still warm.

dinner

There was desert and then bed time for the kids. In all honesty I didn't really make it past kid bed time. The house was super warm with the fire they had built and was tuckered out from our walk, snow play and all that rich food. I snuck up to bed and put MrO down and then promptly followed suite. I guess I missed a very lively and fun game of Cranium but trust me a well rested Vanessa is well worth it!

Thanks again Grammie and Grandpa for letting us play up at the cabin! we sure do love you guys.
We got up leisurely this morning and got the house packed up and cleaned. Back home again, home again jiggity jig.

We have a little neighborhood holiday party to attend this evening so I have some cookie bars in the oven. (I will share the recipe later this week, I am calling them North Pole Bars and they are gooood!) I will be headed down the street with my boys soon. I hope you had as nice of a weekend as I did!

Christmas Reading

I am totally late to the bus on this week's corner view but I think this fits in nicely, the theme this week was "Books".

~~Earlier this week pulled out all my holiday books from when I was a kid. I thought I only had one or two but was surprised to find about 8 or 9! I love the art in these and the stories take me back to being a kid again.

Speaking of being a kid, one of the elementary school choirs came to our office today and sang for us. It about killed me from the cute. I don't' think I have smiled that big for so long in ages. Just seeing all the expressions (from "I am so over this" to "future American Idol") and the crackly high pitched, yet beautiful voices belting out some of my seasonal favorites-It was pretty sweet.

We used to do a holiday program and I remember getting really excited and dressed up for it. I still remember some of those songs and have been singing them to MrO lately. He loves it and once I am done he tells me, "moah"?(more) which totally makes my day since my voice is one only a baby could love, tee hee.

In other news, the temps have warmed up here and the snow has conviently turned into one gigantic slushy. Imagine trying to drive your car on a road made of a 7-11 slurpee and you would just about have it right. I got stuck about 3 times on my own street today- I was way better off when it was ice out there. Who knew? I can't complain about the sunshine though and the mountains look amazing out there all soft and white in their snow blanket.

Through the Viewfinder- a tutorial of sorts

So several of you asked how I got the photos the other day of me wrapping presents. I used a technique called Through the Viewfinder, or TtV, for short. You could also get this effect with post processing. I have seen several TtV textures popping up here and there. But for these shots I used the real deal. If you are interested in a tutorial for how to do your own with out an actual 'old' camera here is a vimeo link.

The first thing you have to do is find a sweet little vintage camera. I like my Kodak Duaflex II, but I know others use various other types of old cameras. As long as you can shoot your digital camera into the viewfinder of the old film camera you are good to go.

the dua

Now that you have an old camera to shoot into, what do you do? You could just shoot straight down into the viewfinder by holding the old camera in one hand and your digital camera in the other-If you did that, you would get something like this,

ttv outback

or like this.

ttv cracker-snacker

Totally fine, but what I like is the clean look that you get when you build a 'contraption' around your old camera. The contraption also helps eliminate the glare that can occur and make it so you just get a photo of your digital camera reflecting back at you. The contraption is a little silly looking and definitely takes the cute away from the duaflex but it does the trick. Be ready for a few funny looks while out in public too I find this technique to be a fantastic conversation starter!
Here is my contraption.

the contraption

I used a cereal box (any soft cardboard will work) and then made another box around the top of the film camera (the duaflex has a 'flip top' lid that covers the viewfinder when not in use so you will build up from that). You want to try to cover all the light leaks that might occur in the contraption, hence the blue painters tape in my example. The height of your box will vary depending on the lens you are shooting with. I switch to one of my lenses that allow for me to zoom in really close or do macro shots.
A very important thing to remember is that while you are building the contraption, you will want to keep testing the lens of your digital camera inside of it in order to make sure it will fit properly. There is nothing more frustrating that making a contraption only to find out that your camera’s lens won’t fit inside! (Ahem, I speak from experience here, can you tell?)
You will want to be able to give enough room for your lens to auto focus yet have it snug enough that it won't slip off too easily. I have thought about creating a contraption out of a black fabric of some sort or another- sort of like a sock that fits around the old camera and that I can stick my lens into but I haven't gotten that far. If you come up with something let me know. I think this would allow for a bit more freedom and easier packing of your cameras!

Down The Isle

So you have your camera, you built your box, now what? Go find a subject matter with lots of color- the more color the better. Set your lens on auto focus, stick that sucker into the contraption box and start shooting! I find natural light really helps get a nice clear photo. You might notice as you shoot and look at your results on the digital camera's screen (or if you are patient enough once you come back in from shooting and upload your photos) that you are getting pictures that look something like this.

Tulips 2

See all that black area around the shot? It’s the sides of the contraption box- to get a nice pretty crop around the actual viewfinder of the old camera head into your post processing software (picnik.com is free if you don't have any) and crop. I also like to use the rotation tool in picnik to level out my image so it isn’t all wonky and on a slant. When cropping I use the square template, this helps the image stay more true to the viewfinder/film size of the old camera and keeps that nostalgic feeling going. The next thing you might want to play around with in the post processing is the saturation, exposure and contrast- I find saturating and adding a bit of contrast to my TtV photos really makes them pop.

tent aka hotel room

Now you might be asking, "But Vanessa, where the heck do I find a camera to do this with"? I picked mine up in at a thrift store (I actually have two now). eBay is always a good place to look as well, lots of people don’t know what to do with these old cameras especially since they don’t make film for them any more. I wouldn't pay more than $15 or $20 for one. I think I paid no more than $10 for each of mine. You can certainly use any camera besides the duaflex as your ‘old camera’. When I first started using this technique I used my grandfather’s Yashica. But because it is so heavy and because I would cry if something happened to it, I found a duaflex instead. I like the grain that the dust gives my photos, some people don’t. I have read that you can open up thecamera and clean off the lens but I haven't done that.

Kathleen asked how I did the self portrait using this technique.
365-Day59--Present Wrapping
I set up my DSLR with the tripod and set my contraption on the floor- I think I might have stuck a book under it or used my mini-tripod to give it a bit more height. I then set up the two cameras like I normally would, DSLR pointing into the contraption and the duaflex pointing at me. I set my timer and then got into place- alternately I could have used my remote but the battery went south on me- so I was doing the ten second dash to get the shots from the other day.

OVdayt09_ttv1

What if you don't have a DSLR? You don't have to have a fancy DSLR to shoot these types of photos- Before I got my Canon I used my Sony Cybershot. You will just have to adjust your contraption accordingly and makes sure that when you zoom with your digital camera that you can get the viewfinder of the old camera into focus. I recommend setting the digi-camera on the macro setting (usually the tulip icon) and then shooting. This will help you zoom in close and stay in focus. refecltion and history
You'll notice in the picture above that I just got a reflection back of my camera in the viewfinder of my 'old' camera- As I mentioned above this is what can happen without building the contraption. It blocks out the light around and lets the viewfinder of the old camera be the star of the show.

This flickr group has a ton of really amazing inspiration and also a great discussion group to help you out along the way. The lovely Andrea over at Hula 70 also did a tutorial (and taught a class at Squam) about TtV here is here how to.

I am no expert on this but since you all asked I wanted to share how I go about the process.

Now get out there and show me what you can do!!! Share with me okay???!

Corner View- Evening

day55, originally uploaded by NessieNoodle.

Taken last night, put the wide angle lens on and rigged up the tripod on the stairwell for a fun point of view. We are enjoying our little tinsel trees and lights, laughing as the boy and dog play and giggle. We are snuggling in because it is COLD out there and the snow is here to stay with more on the way this weekend.

hello snowman

The kids in the 'hood build the best snowmen.
So I thought I would go out and introduce myself.

We are getting hit with snow. no work, now school- it's a sweet little treat for a Monday.
~~~
MrO had his 15 month well check today- we braved the roads to take him in this morning. Really I just wanted to get it over with since I knew this was going to be a whopper of a visit. He got his shots- all 7 of them (ouch. I cried a little. He screamed but blew kisses to the nurse afterwards- such a sweet heart.)
He is 21lbs.13oz and 31.5 inches long. The doc was really happy with his development and said he was very chipper for a doc visit. (We counted almost 25+ words besides mama and daddy that he is babbling or signing right now) walking, and crazy fun as ever.
My mom x-country skied over this afternoon from her house and we have been pretty much tucked in for the day...
I feel like soup or something hot for dinner. Off to find something!
Hope you are all safe and warm today.
Be well
more wish making
"I wish I was a sentimental ornament you hung on the Christmas tree,
I wish I was the star that went on top"
~Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam from the song, Wishlist.
(PJ is one of my all time favorite bands....ever.)
it finally started to snow here today. 4-8 inches on the valley floor by morning. it is light fluffy beautiful and ICY as all get out on the roads.
I love the way the way it glows- all the city lights reflecting off the clouds and the snow. I also love the way it gets so quite- just the crunch of snow under your step.
We put up our trees (funky little fake tinsel trees) and lights tonight. it is looking very festive around these parts...
