'roid week 2013

This week has been so much fun. Seeing the most amazing instant photography in the Flickr pool has been incredibly inspiring and wonderful to view. It was also great fun to have instant photography take over on the Mortal Muse blog, did you see all the great posts we had?

Here are the images I shared in the pool. All images except for the last one were shot using my Polaroid Land Camera 103 using Fuji pull apart film. The final image was shot using my sx-70 using impossible film. Happy Film Friday!

Film Friday

20130227-_MG_6722

A goal of mine this year is to shoot more film, specifically shoot about a roll/pack a month.

I am behind on this goal, but have no fear... the film bug has bitten and I am feeling my groove.

I really enjoy shooting with my Polaroid land-camera.The color film from Fuji makes me especially excited and I think the kids like it too...

This might just be one of my all time favorite polaroid shots, ever.
it is a little darker in real life, but the moment, oh the moment.

I am still getting used to shooting with the my Land Camera 100 and there seems to be a bit of a difference when it comes to shooting the black and white vs. the color Fuji film. I love all of these for various reasons. I love how film makes me think, slow down and capture the moment so differently than digital does. The kids move so much faster than I can with the bulk and all the steps, but I think the more I use it, the easier it will be.

The Meadow

A few weekends ago we went up to the cabin for a quick and quiet get away.
On Sunday, we wandered down a dirt road that follows the backside of the meadow near town.

We were hoping the cows would be there, but they hadn't been moved from their winter pasture yet.
Even though there were now cows to speak of, the kids had a great time tossing rocks into the creek, KUR-plunk!

Pull Apart

100:366, outta here
My camera body and the 50mm are in the shop. Over the weekend I bumped the lens against something and I broke the thing. My heart instantly sunk when I realized the focus wasn't going to work anymore. Fingers crossed the Camera Doctor can fix the lens*. Get a hood for your lens, lesson learned. I'm not afraid of a little sun flare, but I am afraid of the fact that I lug my camera everywhere and the lens is going to get bumped at some point or another.

O

For the record, I did have a hood on my lens. I also have my UV filter on there as well to keep it safe. But the Steve, the camera doc, explained that I had on the wrong kind. If I really wanted to protect it I needed the hood that mounts to the barrel and not the kind that screws onto the actual lens.

cabin

What does that have to do with these photos? Well, a lot actually. Without my digital camera, I still needed to shoot a photo for the day. I have a few cameras to choose from, but I think my favorite film camera right now is my Polaroid 103. I use Fuji pull apart film and I love it. I can totally see the Fuji colors that I remember from shooting 35mm.

The kids always look at me like I am crazy when I pull out the Polaroid.
It's big and takes me forever to set up a shot.
What is that thing?
Why can't I see the photo on the back of the camera?
What are you pulling out of there?
WHY are you ripping that picture apart?
But then the magic of the film lures them in and they love it.
I like that my kids are being exposed to words, "film", "develop", and "not so instant, instant photography" But mostly, that I can share this part of photographic history with them, too.

**Update! just got my camera and lens back. Good as new, and although a little bit costly, not nearly as much as buying a new 1.4!

the run down

I got such amazing gifts this year.

Did you see the Polaroid over on flickr that my mom found at the local thrift store?
land camera
I told you she has magic thrifting dust. It is in great condition and I might even be able to use it still- check out this blog for cool Polaroid info (and photos).

Daddy-O is a very good listener.
I mentioned in passing about a pair of earrings that I really liked that I found on line. He didn't just get me one, but two pairs of new earrings! these and these
swoon. They are so pretty and simple and go with just about everything.
It makes him crazy that I don't have a good bag to hold all my gear in so he found a camera bag, a back pack actually to stash and tote my gear around in (and keep it all safe). It is really nice and now I can bring along more than just one lens when we go somewhere. He also found a remote for my camera, which might make those jumping shots a little easier. And finally, this lens. How fun is that? Here are a couple shot taken with it.

Daddy-O took these while we were up in Truckee visiting family. It is really fun to use, but makes you a little dizzy with the mirror and all. Once I get a bit more comfortable with it I think it will be really great, especially for when we travel!

With all this new camera gear I better get out and take some pictures I guess!!

Dang this light any way.

kitchen window

I have exactly one more week. I am going to miss being able to look out this window any time of day I please. Going to miss being able to watch the light as it streams in on the dirty dishes, highlighting the remains of the morning oatmeal or the froth lines of my latte in the big cup.

Will I even know what to do with myself when I sit down in my ergonomic, purple chair that sits behind my monitor; in the office that was once a storage closet? How the heck are my eyes going to be able to read emails if they are full of tears instead of the image of my sweet little man? Will my arms understand not having the weight of the little dude in them? My hands will certainly not like holding onto the mouse and tapping the letter painted keys. No, they would much rather be changing diapers and tracing the shape of his ears all day.

Dang, it this is gonna be hard. I hope he will forgive me for having to go back to work.

We never made it out camping this weekend.

Our Little Chicken

halloween things

Things are a little spooky out there for our little chicken.

So he stayed up as late as he could (8pm) and then drifted off to sleep.

Happy Halloween everyone!

snow man

snowman

It rained and rained and rained on Friday- we got a quarter of our annual rainfall in just about 12 hours. it was amazing and wet. Later on in the afternoon, maybe around 5, it started to snow. Huge, fluffy flakes that drift down and settle into the wet ground- creating a base for the others who would fall after them.
I had a pedicure appointment on Friday afternoon with my mom and by the time we were done and in our silly flip flops there was about 2 inches of cold, white snow to step into as we hurried to my car.
Once I got home I settled in with some tomato/red pepper soup and a quesadilla. I read some of my new Yoga Journal magazine and then watched as the kids across the street tossed snowballs at each other and whooped it up outside. The street looking much lighter than normal with the reflection of the snow was lit up with the remaining Christmas lights in the neighborhood. I love the way sounds get muffled and also how the are amplified when it snows.
Yesterday morning it was bright and sunny when we woke up. We threw the dogs in the backyard and we headed out front with the rest of the street to clear our driveways and sidewalks. That is when we found the huge slumping snowman at the end of the cul-de-sac.
Later that day we took out our snowshoes, my mom put on her cross country skis and we hooked up the dogs to the leash to head over to the park. It was beautiful- foggy snowy and quiet up there. I wished I had brought my camera, but it was still snowing and I was worried I would have ruined it with the moisture.
As we plodded along on our shoes the dogs hopped in and out of the snow, looking more like seals or dolphins in the ocean than schnauzers. They had a blast, but by the time we made it to the other side of the park they were tired and so full of snow they could hardly walk anymore.
snowy schnauzer

We headed home and defrosted the dogs.We took care of a few things around the house and then headed out to Andy's sister's house for dinner. A perfect way to end such a lovely day.

We are getting things pulled together for our trip- only 4 more days until we take off for Maui. I am debating a knitting project for the plane. I have 2 books that I am excited to start (Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and Three Cups of Tea). I have been spinning ideas around for a speech to say at the wedding- I am so excited for the trip and to be there with friends for the first half of the stay will be really fun. I am also looking forward to lazy days on the beach with sand in my toes and salty air on my face.

Be well friends!

aloe and poppies

aloe and poppies

Count down the days for several events.
1. birthday
2. Christmas
3. New Years
4. Trip to Maui

I do try and stay in the present and not worry too much about what is going to happen in the future, but these events are on my mind and getting me excited.
The "tree" can't go up until after my birthday or else things feel too rushed, so we haven't started any of the decorating etc. despite the fact that the neighbors along our street have all lit up their homes in proper December fashion. We are waiting...
We aren't doing a live tree this year. Just the funky fun ones that my mom found at a thrift store last year- white and green little guys that I decorate with purple lights and are so funky and fresh with retro feel it makes me smile just to think about it.

What are you counting down the days until?
